Who Are Lions?

Lions are members of Lions Clubs International, a community service organisation dedicated to the idea that the men and women who live in a community are in the best position to know who needs help and why. Local Clubs are part of the world's largest such organisation, with over 1.4 million members serving in more than 193 countries and areas.

Lions have been a proud part of the Australian community since 1947. They have been helping to serve without promise or want of reward. Lions are people like you - Ordinary People doing incredible things!

Are you considering becoming a Lion? To join a Lions Club is by invitation, however applications are encouraged are encouraged from all interested members of the community. Membership is open to men and women over the age of 18 years and of good character and reputation. If you are interested in joining Lions and reaping the benefits of fellowship, and wanting to share in the strong sense of achievement and reward resulting in serving your community, click here or the button below to be put in touch with a local Lions Club in your area.

LIONS DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH

Did you know that 2 people develop diabetes in the world every 10 seconds?

Diabetes is growing global epidemic affecting 246 million and diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of vision loss in adults of working age in industrialized countries

Diabetes prevention is proven, possible and powerful. Eating healthier and getting 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week are two simple lifestyle changes that can delay or prevent diabetes (source: National Diabetes Education Program, 2008).

In November, Lions have 2 special opportunities to promote diabetes awareness:

- November of Lions Diabetes Awareness Month

- November 14th is World Diabetes Day

For more information about activities to commemorate Lions Diabetes Awareness month and the Strides?Lions Walk for Diabetes Awareness Program, click here.

LONGEST WALK FOR AN AUSSIE KID

Lion John Olsen of the Lions Club of Geelong has now walked unsupported for 3,400 km and has passed through Cameron's Corner and is proceeding eastward along the dingo fence on the NSW/Qld border toward Hungerford. He has 1,800 km to go before he reaches the east coast at Byron Bay. He has been assisted by an air-drop of supplies organized by Lions Club of Coober Pedy and has recently survived a severe desert sand storm.

John is in regular contact by Telstra sat-phone and is encouraged by public support and by the generosity of Lions throughout Australia. With your help over $50,000 has been raised for ALCMF and ALDS. Johns is a regular feature on the ABC radio  Macka's "Australia all Over" on Sunday Mornings.

For details of his progress please visit his website on
